Dept. of Natural Resources
As agreed to during our meeting on July 18, 1983, I am forwarding the Sandhill Crane
Monitoring Plan that Path will conduct during seismic and drilling programs this
summer and early fal! of I983.
Data compiled by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (D.O.W.) in the last few years have
shown that the sandhills will abandon the nest if disturbed during egg laying or
incubation. The D.O.W. currently stipulates that no exploration activity occur in the
area of nesting sandhills prior to Tune 1st annually. Unfortunately, there are no data on
Sandhill responses to exploration activities during brood rearing.
Because of this situation, PbcM has agreed to study the sandhills in the Twentymile Park
area. This study is designed to evaluate the responses of sandhills with young to seismic
and drilling activities. information collected will be of considerable value to both the
MLRD and P6rM (as well as other companies) in future decision making where these
birds are involved.
P6~M has been monitoring three known nesting pairs of sandhills in the Twentymile Park
area since early May of this year. sandhills are known to have nested and raised young
in the area previously, but no data other than nest site locations have been collected.
This year's nest sites are shown on the attached map. All three pairs were successful in
bringing off young (one each). However, one pair (in Sec. 17) subsequently lost their
young. As of last week, the other two pairs still had their young. The areas where the
adults with young have been observed are shown on the attached map. The two pairs of
birds with young have been observed only in those drainages where nesting occurred.
The pair that lost the young have been observed moving around the area more since that
time.
As indicated, PdcM will monitor the sandhills during seismic and exploration activities
this summer. Following is the monitoring plan P6cM proposes to follow in evaluating the
responses of these birds.
Gulf
• $V B$IDI<RV OF OVLF OIL CORPORRTION
T[lfrxox[, (303) ]596500
