HUMIDITY CELL TESTS
t METHODS (cont.)
OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
Air flow is maintained through each cell at 5 to 8 liters per
minute during both dry and humidified periods. Hose clamps are
' utilized to aid in equalizing flow rates. During the humidified time
period (3 days), approximately 110-150 mis of vaporized water pass
through each cell. Ambient temperatures during testing range from 60'
' to 80' F. Sample material contained in the cell is left undisturbed
for the duration of the test.
~ RESULTS
t All analytical results on leachates generated from each cell are
reported on a standard format. Graphs of pH, cumulative sulfate, and
' cumulative acidity versus time are also reported.
DISCUSSION
Kinetic tests used to predict acid mine drainage are a relatively
new concept. Humidity cell tests are designed to measure the rate of
oxidation and weathering of various types of materials. Operating
specifications are flexible and can be designed to best match a
particular environment. Results can also be reported in a format that
~ best fits the needs of the project.
