1
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The purpose of this report is to provide results of an investi-
' gation and analysis of stability conditions for a proposed waste
disposal site at the Red Canyon mine. Information on the proposed
configuration of slopes were obtained from plan and profile sheets
provided by Ute Engineering and Surveying Company in Delta, Colorado.
There are several different types of instability which may
' affect fill slopes. These include large-scale mass instability
(landslide type movement), raveling or sloughing, and erosion. The
1 stability analyses performed as part of this investigation deal onl}~
' with the large-scale mass instability or landsliding type of problem.
The factors of safety provided refer only to this type of instability.
We have assumed that the other aspects of instability of the proposed
fill slopes have been sufficiently covered by others.
GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS AND PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS:
The site is located approximately three miles northwest of
' Cedaredge, Colorado in Delta County. A general location diagram in
map form will be found in the Appendix of this report.
' The topography of the site tends to be moderate to steeply
' sloping in a westerly direction. Major drainage in the vicinity of
the site trends in a south to southwesterly direction.
' Physiographically, the site lies in the Colorado Plateau
Physiographic Province near its northwest margin with the Southern
t Rocky Mountain Province. The site lies in an area containing
' Cretaceous Age sediments, such as the Mesa Verde grouF and the
Mancos Shale. The rock types most commonly observed consist of
2
