• on the enzymatic release of HCN. Potential for poisoning is highly
variable. Good growth is obtained on soils that are loams and clay
loams and fair growth on sandy loams. Growth on gentle and moderate
slopes is good and on steep slopes fair growth is achieved. Medium
ability to control erosion may be expected. Establishment requirements
are medium. Short term revegetation potential is low to medium and long
term is medium to high. High potential biomass production is
characteristic of this shrub. It provides fair cover for elk and good
cover for the other four classes of wildlife. Good to fair forage ie
provided to wildlife also. Sheet and cattle forage palatability is
rated good. Energy value retention is good and protein fair.
RUBBER RABBITBRUSH: CHRYSOTHAMNUS NAUSEOSUS (PALLJvS) BRI TT.
•
This rabbitbrush is a native preferring dry sites from 4,600 to
9,000 feet. It reproduces sexually and may fix nitrogen. It is a minor
poisoner of livestock and an economic weed. Several varieties of this
plant are common rangeland inhabitants. Rubber rabbitbrush has been
considered toxic to stock and preliminary feeding experiments support
this conclusion. This species appears to be the least palatable.
Rubber rabbitbrush's growth on the topsoil reconstructive material in
the Moffat Area is rated good. Growth on gentle and moderate elopes is
good and growth is fair on steep areas. Erosion control is rated
medium. Establishment requirements are low. This plant is rated low
for short term revegetation potential and medium to high for long terms.
Potential biomass production for this rabbitbrush is medium. Good cover
is provided for deer, game birds, small non-game birds and small
• mammals. Cover for elk is fair. Forage value is good for deer and elk
and feir for the other three classes of wildlife. Forage palatability
Mid-term '94 4.4-A-29 September 15,1994
