Energy and <br />protein values are poor. <br />SAINFOIN: ONDBRYCHIS VICIAEFOLIA SCOP. <br />This plant is a European introduction that has escaped and become <br />naturalized in Colorado between 5,000 and 8,500 feet. It prefers dry- <br />moist sites. It is a perennial forb that produces a pod that is 1 to 2 <br />seeded. It has the potential to become a colonizing weed. Sainfoin is <br />a nitrogen fixer. This forb is not poisonous. Growth on gentle to <br />moderate slopes is good and fair on steep slopes. Fair cover ie <br />produced for game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals. Fnir <br />food value is produced for all five wildlife categories. Small non-game <br />• birds in particular, relish the fruit of sainfoin. <br />LEWIS FLAX: LINUM LEWISII <br />Lewis flax is a native, perennial forb growing in dry sites with <br />an elevation range between 5,200 and 11,000 feet. It is non-weedy, <br />reproduces sexually, and is suspected as poisonous to livestock. Growth <br />is good on sandy loam, loam and clay loam. Lewis flax has good growth <br />on gentle to moderate slopes and fair growth on steep slopes. This flax <br />is rated low for erosion control, medium in establishment requirements, <br />low short term revegetation potential for biomass production. Cover <br />values are fair for birds and good for small mammals. Food values are <br />fair for birds and small mammals.
