• high for this bluegrass. Potential biomass production ie medium. Cover
value for game birds, small non-game birds and small mammals ie good.
Elk food value is good. Cattle and sheep forage palatability is good.
Energy retention values are fair and protein poor.
Based on the above information, this grass is a valuable species
for revegetation at the Edna Mine. Kentucky bluegrass is desirable for
the approved post-mining land use for both wildlife and domestic
livestock. The rhizomatous habit of this grass makes it an excellent
vegetative stabilizer for erosion control. This species is compatible
with the plant and animal species present in the region. It may be a minor poisoner of livestock (•). Growth
in sandy loam, loam and clay loam on gentle slopes is good. On moderate
slopes, growth is fair and on steep ones poor. Erosion control
potential for this grass is medium. The species has low establishment
requirements. Long and short term revegetation potential are medium.
Potential biomass production is also rated medium. Fair cover for small
non-game birds and small mammals is produced. Meadow fescue is fair in
food value for small mammals. Cattle and sheep forage palatability are
both good.
