Their work has shown that if native plant establishment and the reduction of weeds is the
goal then available soil nitrogen must be limited in the soil Their recommendation for establishing
native planu from shrubs to grasses to grasses to forbs is to forgo the application of supplemental
nitrogen, and in cases where weed are a major or potential problem, tie-up the available soil nitrogen
with an available cazbon source such as sugaz.
OMI, therefore, proposes to eliminate the additional of supplemental nitrogen and will apply 57 lbs
per acre of Tripple Super Phosphate (PzO:) to be incorporated to a depth of 1-2 inches by mechanical
means. This incorporation of the phosphate in the upper 2 inches of the plant growth medium will
assist with the establishment and the growth of the germinating natives during the critical eazly
development phases (rates and depth of application derived form Dr. Ed Redente, Range Science
Department, College of Natural Resources, Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado,
9/26/96).
2.7 CONTROL OF WEEDS
This weed control plan is concerned with the control of all varieties of thistle and weeds on the mine
site. Weed control will be accomplished by spot spraying thistles and/or weed with an industrial
herbicide. Spraying will be done by use of a portable spray system Amine 2,4-D and Banve1720 are
two water soluble industrial herbicides which have been recommended by the Delta County
Ekzension Service for use to control all types of thistle and weeds.
The herbicides will not be applied when spray particles maybe tamed by air currenu to areas where
desirable planu are growing. Herbicide containers will be triple rinsed and the rinse water will be
sprayed on an established gravel roadway. All label recommendations will be followed. Application
rates and procedures maybe modified according to the label recommendations.
The operator will keep on file, for inspection by the Division, records of its weed control activities.
The weed convol records will document the location where weed control was performed, the type of
weed control employed, and the date when the weed control was performed. As part of iu annual
reclamation report required under Rule 2.04.13, the Operator will summatve to weed control
activities for the yeaz.
PR04 H 6 Revised May 2001
