If seeds in the reclamation mix are unavailable or too experuive, alternauve <br />species from Table 4 may be included in the mix at the operator's discretion. The alternate seeds will <br />be selected from a like category i.e. grasses for grasses, shmbs for shmbs etc. Seed and fertilizer will <br />be dry broadcast at their prescribed rates on the sites, and then with a special take attachment and <br />chain dng attached to the seeding equipment will bury the seed and phosphate fertili7xr to the <br />required depth. The rake attachment u constructed in such a way that the tines will loosen the plant <br />growth medium while the tires or treads on the seeding unit will create depressions for the seed and <br />phosphate. The chain drag is attached to the rake and its oscillation during each pass will assist in <br />burying the seed and fenilizer. Any areas not receiving sufficient coverage will be hand-raked at the <br />conclusion of mechanical openrions. <br />2.4 MULCHING <br />A straw mulch clean and free from weed seed will be applied to most areas to be reclaimed at a rate of <br />4,000 lbs/acre. This rate has proven effective in controlling erosion without "smothering" seedling <br />development, building organic matter and retaining moisture. The mulch will be applied and crimped <br />following broadcast seeding. If hydromulching u, used then pure wood fiber mulch u to be applied <br />and crimped following broadcast seeding. If hythromulching is used, pure wood fiber mulch u to be <br />applied at the rate of 1,800-2,000 lbs per acre. Tacifier is to be applied at the rate of 120 pounds per <br />acre on slopes steeper than 3H1V and 60-80 ]bs per acre on slopes shallower than 3H:1V. Erosion <br />control blankets or similar control devices may ako be used on the steeper slopes. <br />2.5 PLANTING TIME <br />The seed mix is comprised primarily of cool season species. A fall planting u projected to allow these <br />species to benefit from cold winter temperature and moisture for pre-germination requirements. <br />• 2.6 IRRIGATION AND FERTILIZATION <br />Use of the planting and mulching methods specified above will result in satisfactory plant <br />establishment, barring abnormally dry conditions.
