• drainage class <br />• depth to a saturated zone or groundwater, if encountered <br />• salts or alkali if present <br />• surface stoniness <br />In 1982, SCS adopted a new system of soil horizon nomenclature (Guthrie and Witty, 1982). <br />All soil series being mapped within ongoing surveys would be revised before publication. Soil <br />series not being currently mapped would be revised at a later time. As a result, because the <br />SCS Routt County soil survey is incomplete at this time, some official SCS soil series <br />descriptions for soils in the Yoast study area may not have the new horizon nomenclature. The <br />Yoast soil survey was conducted in accordance with the standards of the National Cooperative <br />Soil survey. Some horizon nomenclature revision, as necessary, was completed as part of this <br />final report. <br />The sampling site number and location were plotted on the topographic base field map. An <br />adequate amount of representative soil material (about 2 quarts) was taken from each major <br />horizon or subhorizon at the sampling locations of the described soil pedons. <br />Samples were collected from backhoe pits which were dug at each sampling location. The <br />sampled soil material was placed in clean, labeled, polyethylene plastic bags, and kept cool and <br />as dry as possible to limit chemical changes. Most samples were moist upon sampling and were <br />air dried prior to shipment to Colorado State University's Soil Testing Laboratory in Fort Collins, <br />Colorado, for all characterization required by CDMG. <br />Each sample was split at the laboratory with one portion being used for analysis and the second, <br />archival portion retained should any future tests be required. Five percent of the samples were <br />also tested for certain parameters at a second laboratory for Quality Assurance/Quality Control <br />(QA/QC) purposes. Inter-Mountain Laboratories (IML), Sheridan, Wyoming, performed the <br />additional testing. <br />In addition, PWCC was provided with a full set of soil correlation box samples, one set for each <br />individual soil series mapped and sampled on the study area. <br />A final task related to soil profile description concerned correlation. All study area soils were <br />correlated with existing SCS soil series criteria. Current soil series and map unit descriptions, <br />Form 5's (Soil Interpretation Record), and range site descriptions, for soils previously mapped <br />on the study area, were obtained from SCS and placed in PWCC's field and office notebook. <br />This information facilitated soil series correlation. • <br />12 <br />
