observations were sequentially numbered in the field book and plotted on the 1" = 400' scale <br />topographic base map. <br />Map units were delineated on the 1" = 400' scale topographic base map. <br />3.3 Soil Sampling and Profile Description <br />All soil taxonomic units appearing in the soil survey legend and occurring within the projected <br />disturbance area were described and characterized. Soil sample sites were located primarily <br />within the anticipated disturbance area. Each mapped soil type (established soil series, variant, <br />or taxadjunct) was fully described at a typical location a minimum of one time, or more in <br />accordance with the gradational size of that soil's projected disturbance area. All soil description <br />and sampling was done in accordance with specifications contained in the PWCC scope-of-work <br />letter approved, as revised, by CDMG. The sampling adequately characterized each map unit, <br />and followed or exceeded sample intensities recommended by PWCC and CDMG. <br />Sample site locations were selected to most accurately represent the sampled soil series and <br />to provide for adequate sample site distribution across the projected disturbance areas. <br />Transition zones between map units, road edges, fence rows, or previously disturbed areas were <br />avoided. Representative profiles were selected on the basis of medial characteristics for physical <br />and chemical soil characteristics, parent material, landscape position, and vegetation. The major . <br />soil horizons (A, E, B, and C) were separately described, sampled, and analyzed. Portions of <br />paralithic material (Cr), if present, were also described, sampled, and analyzed for <br />characterization purposes and possible subsequent use as a topsoil substitute if needed. <br />Each soil pedon description was described according to current methods and standards of the <br />National Cooperative Soil Survey. Descriptions were completed to a depth of five or six feet, <br />bedrock, or auger refusal if hardpan was encountered. Surface horizons (A1, A2, etc.) were <br />sampled to represent no greater than about 6 to 12 inches of soil material per sample. In the <br />subsoil and substratum (B and C horizons), natural horizons (Bw, Bt, C1, C2, and so forth) were <br />subdivided such that individual samples did not represent greater than about 18 to 24 inches of <br />soil material. <br />Physical, and where possible, chemical properties of each horizon within the sampled profile <br />were described and recorded in the field on standard SCS "232" soil description forms.
