Colors are commonly variegated due to the <br />nature of the parent material, It is a heavy clay loam or clay and has 35 to <br />45 percent clay, 20 to 50 percent silt, and ]0 to 55 percent sand with less <br />than 35 pezcent being fine or coarser. It is slightly acid or neutral. <br />The C horizon has hue of 7,SYR through 2.SY. It is typically a clay <br />loam or sandy clay loam. It is slightly acid to mildly alkaline. <br />V4-CD - Big Hlue Clay Igam, 0 to 6 Percent Slopes <br />The Big Blue series is a member of the fine, montmorillonitic ' <br />I {;, <br />(calcareous), frigid family of Typic Haplaquolls. Soils of this series are <br />deep, poorly drained, and fine-textured. These soils have formed i~ fine- <br />texture alluvium weathered from shale. They occupy nearly level toy gently '} <br />sloping low terraces and valley bottoms. <br />The average annual precipitation is ]6 to 20 inches. The (average <br />annual air temperature is 44 to 50 degrees. The average frost free season is <br />]00 to 120 days. <br />I <br />Typically, the upper part of the surface layer is dark grayish brown <br />clay loam about 5 inches thick. The lower part of the surface layer is dark <br />grayish brown silty clay about 90 inches thick. The substratum is gray cal- <br />careous silty clay to 60 inches or more. Gleyed colors and mottles are common <br />in the subsoil and substratum. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of Alamosa loam, Hekdt silty <br />clay loam, Limon seeped phase, and Sili clay loam. <br />Permeability is slow.
