March 9, 1993
Mr. Dennis DeVorc
Colorado State Lands Boazd
1313 Sherman Street
Room 620
Denier, CO 80201
RE: Request for Use o[ Vegetation Refercoce Area for Kaiser's Colorado Coal Mine No. 1-(Permit C-81-
024)
Dear Mr. DeVore,
On behalf of Kaiser Steel Resources, we would like to request use of a small portion of state land in
the northeast quarter of Section 36, Towttship 27 South, Range 67 West for a vegetation reference area for
the mine. The site is located approAmately four miles north of WaLsenburg, Colorado. The attached map
indicates the area of interest. No funkier mining is planned for this site and all past mining aetivity has been
reclaimed. The reference area was selected a number of years ago and we would like to maintain the area for
reference through final bond release which may not occur for another five to seven years. We would not
• propose any change in the management of the area, however, the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
would like a letter from you granting Kaiser access to the property as vegetation assessments are required.
These assessments would include evaluation of cover, species diversity, shrub density, and forage production.
The only disturbance invoh~ed in these assessments would be clipping of several one-half meter plots to obtain
forage weights.
Should you have quesdoas or if you need additional information concerning this request, please do
not hesitate to call meat (303) 859-0930 or Mr. Mike Keegan of Kaiser at (303) 731-5055. We appreciate your
cooperation to allow us this access.
Sincerety, ._
~ ~~
]erry H.
