• area; these game species are only occasional visitors and do not appear
to utilize habitats on the study area for breeding or other important
biological functions. The lack of use by irrg~ortant species, the small
size of the Nucla mine, and the long history of mining and agricultural
disturbance in the area precludes the delineation of any habitats on or
near the Nucla mine as ing~ortant wildlife habitat.
WILDLIFE ORIIIv'I'ID RFxRFATION
Hunting is a principal recreational opportunity in southwestern Colora::o.
The majority of hunting in the region occurs on public lands, particularly
national forests. The Uncaripragllre National Forest boundaries lie within
7 miles of the study area.
A list of potentially huntable or trappable game species occuring in the
Nucla study area is provided in Table 6. However, none of the species
occur in sufficient numbers on the study area to attract hunters.
• Also, access in the study area is restricted for mire saftey purposes and
the landowner does not allow htuiting (personal commuLication, ,March 1980,
Ann Garrett, Peabody Coal Company). As a result, wildlife oriented
recreational opportunities do not presently occur on the N'ucla study area.
•
-50-
~uw > > ,eso
