• km). The white-cnx~med sparrow was the most abundant species encountered
(58.7 individuals/]cn) and showed an affinity for t'us ty~i~e.
The song sparrow was observed only i-~ the riparian habitat during the winter
surveys and rrs observed in sufficient numt:ers to indicate an affinity for
this type . i7'ie other species which showed an affinit}• for ribarian habitats
during winter surveys was the Oregon junco.
Alfalfa field. Three passerine species wire observed in the alfalfa field
during the winter surveys: western meadowlark, white-cra,~med sparrow and
raven. The western meadowlark and w~}u te-crowned sparra.~ were the most abundant
passerines encountered with relative abundance indices of 35.3 and 12.0
individuals/]cn, respectively. This habitat supported the second highest
total avian population (50.0 individuals/',cc:) and the second highest species
diversity index (0.78). The western meadaalark was observed only in the
alfalfa type during the winter transects and exhibited an affinity for this
type.
• Juniper. The juniper vegetation type supported three passerine species
during the winter surveys: Oregon junco, white-civwned sparrow and raven.
The former species was the rrnst abundant species encountered (15.3 individuals/
km). This habitat type supported the third highest total avian population
(17.3 individuals/Ian). The species diversity index (0.43) was
relatively low because frost observations ~,rere of the Oregon junco. Accordingly,
the Oregon junw exhibited an affinity for the juniper type.
Grassland pasture. The only tHn passerine species encountered in the grassland
pasture habitat during the winter passerine .transects were the raven and cor,:;on
crow. This habitat supported the second lost total avian population (3.3
individuals/lacJ. The Shannon-'r7einer species diversity index was 0.50.
L`pland sagebrush. The raven was the only species encountered along the sage-
brush transects during the winter surveys. Accordingly, the Shannon-~~'einer
diversity i~xiex was 0.0. This habitat su~.~orted the latest total avian ponu-
lation (2.0 irrlividuals/',~n) during the winter survey.
-35-
JUN ! ~ ~aec
