• with alfalfa hay (A',edicago sativa) during the 1979 growing season and :Lar-
vested during the late sunnier. Although harvest records were not available for
ttu s site, similar dry land alfalfa fields in t'ris area of Colorado produce
between 2000 and 3000 1bs dry weight alfalfa per acre per ye-ir (personal
conmunication, 1979, Mr. Thomas Darty, Agricultural Extension Agent, Nnntrose,
Colorado).
Juniper vegetation type. The juniper caTmunity, characterized by Utah
juniper trees (Juniperus osteosperma), co-~rises 1.80 acres on the study area.
This type is actually an agricultural sub-type as the herbaceous urderstory
is alfalfa hay meadow. Juniper trees within triis agricultural area were
well scattered and thus, do not appear to have any affect on the production
and species composition of t:~e understorl~ vegetation which is a.~ alfalfa
field. Tree density is 45.7 trees/acre (a total of 59 trees occur within
the type) and basal area averages 737.10 cn2. All trees are Utah juruper.
This juniper area represents scattered individual trees in an alfaira field.
• (Marian Associates 1979).
Riparian vegetation type. The riparian tz~pe conprises 1.93 acres or 1.7;
of the total study area. The type occurs along an irrigation ditch and
consists of a stall conrnuu ty of conmon cattail (T}roha latifolia), baltic-
rush (Juncos balticus), and longstem spikerush (Eleocharis macrostachva) and
a wall tree corrrunity. The tree conmtuiitf consists of 11 Chinese elm
(ULnus ~*viflora), 13 narrowleaf cottonwocd (Popuius angustifolia,) a.~d 3
plains cottonwood (POpulus sarge7tii). Total density is ~4.5 trees/acre
while average basal area is 303.29 cm`. Quantitative cover or production
estimates were nit made for this type (Nation Associates 1979).
WILDLIFE
Data gathered during 1979-1960 wildlife studies at Nucla Mine and site
specific information found in the literature are discussed by sajor wildlife
oonQonents belv.~. .~ list of vertebrate species positi~~Pi.;~ indertif"led for
-13-
JUM ~ 1 1989
