_ drainages, including Steven's Gulch. The main streams of East Roatcao, West
Roatcap, and Terror Creek transport the finer sediments into the North Fork of
~:
the Cl;nnison River Valley. Eden to the present, however, the erosional history
is one of degradation and the sediments being depositxi are mostly from sheet
erosion, soil creep and minor movement of soil down the stream channels during
spring runoff and storm events, in recent time, minor amounts of fine sediments
have been deposited along gentle stretches of valley floors, where Mesaverde
strata outcrops have formed gentler slopes along upland drainages, and in
isolated flat areas, small catchment basins, and low gradient drainages in the
landslide topography. Plate 2 illustrates the surficial geology of the area.
DISCUSSION OF SPECIFIC DRAINAGES
Following is a discussion of each drainage and major tributaries in and
adjacent to the proposed permit area. Stevens Gulch and East Roatcap Creek are
within the permit area; all others are located adjacent to the permit area. The
major drainages are discussed first with their tributaries examined separately.
• ;; The location of each area is shown on Plate 1.
Steven's 3ulch
A thorough review of the Stevens Gulch drainage was presented by Geo-Hydro
Consulting, Inc. in their September 7, 1982 report (Volume 4, CWI Permit
Application). Because of this initial reconnaissance, Steven's Gulch was not a
focus of attention in this investigation. For purposes of review, however,
Geo-Hydro concluded from their study that Stevens Gulch and the CWI well field
in particular, should not he designated as an alluvial valley floor based on the
following reasons:
1) Ground water depth measurements indicate that the area
identified is not subirrigated for a sufficient period
of the year to support agricultural acti•~ities.
I •--
