5.0 NORTH FORK GUNNISON RIVER ALLWIUM
5.1 ALLWIUM EXTENT AND CHARACTER
The delineated alluvium in the North Fork Gunnison
River Valley lies along both sides of the river. Identified
components of the alluvium include the river channel, and land-
forms of the floodplain and alluvial terraces (Plate 2).
The North Fork Gunnison River channel is a well defined
perennial water course, approximately 100 to 150 feet wide in
the subject area.
The alluvial floodplain and terraces are clearly sep-
arated from upland deposits by a distinct morphological step
on the northwest side of the river. A similar morphological
• step defines the alluvium on the southeast side of the channel,
but here the boundary is occasionally made indistinct by lobes
of outwash material from the slopes above. The alluvial de-
posits on either side of the river coincide in terms of elev-
ation. The width of the valley floor is much greater southeast
of the river through the entire study area.
Much of the alluvial valley lands currently support
orchards. A number of private residences and farm buildings
are located on the alluvium in the study area.
Two test pits were excavated in the alluvium on CWI
orchard land to investigate the character of the alluvium
(test pits TP-1 and TP-2). Logs of the test pits are presented
in Appendix A; their locations are indicated on Plate 2. The
_ 16 -
•
c,EO-xroao cor~.winNC, iNC.
