some well rounded gravels of '~ inch to 1 inch in dimension in the stream
• channel, there is no indication the deep soils of the Delson loam were
streamlaid. There are no meadows, floodplains, or terraces indicative of
alluvial deposits. Where the stream has exposed recent cuts with banks up to
eight feet in height, no stratified sediments were observed.
The vegetation in Long Draw is typical of many other tributary drainages in
the area. oak brush dominates the steep side slopes while perennial and annual
grasses and fortis with some shrubs dominate the swales and openings. Plant
species observed here include bluegrass, redtop, brom~rass, slender wheatgrass
(Agropyron trachycaulum), western wheatgrass, and several species of weedy
fortis. In the stream channel itself were cottonwood, willows, chokecherry,
serviceberry, and other low growing shrubs. 'There were no plant species that
indicated subirrigation.
Domestic livestock grazing and wildlife habitat are the primary land uses
of this area. In addition, two shallow pits intercept the groundwater flow in
this tributary and the water is transported approximately 4 miles, via pipeline,
• ,, to Stucker Mesa for domestic use.
'The above discussion indicates that Long Draw is not an alluvial valley
floor. The deep soils present in the draw are a result of sheet erosion and are
primarily collwial in nature. There are no meadows, floodplains or terraces
and no stratified sediments which would indicate alluvial, streamlaid deposits.
There are no plant species that indicate the presence of subirrigation. The
steep side slopes of the Swale as well as its distance from any other cultivated
area make Long Draw unsuitable as a farming unit. 'The area best serves as a
grazing area for livestock and wildlife.
Morrell Cow Canq~ (tributary to Terror Creek)
i•~
An almost linear stream channel originates on the north side of the
watershed divide above Steven's Clilch and flows to Terror Creek in the vicinity
of the hbrrell Cow Camp headwaters in Section 1, T13S-R92W. The channel begins
on a steep slope of the basaltic rubble, which may overlie a ledge of the
Mesaverde sandstone. The stream channel is eroding Mesaverde strata along most
