LOng <br />Division Director <br />The Division has received a copy of Twentymile Coal Company's fourth quarter 1998 discharge <br />monitoring report for Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Permit No. CO- <br />0042161. Twentymile Coal Company identified that iron exceeded the permit limitations. The <br />Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has been notified by Twentymile Coal <br />Company of these excesses. Twentymile Coal Company is coordinating with Colorado Department of <br />Public Health and Environment to bring the Fish Creek Borehole discharge into compliance. <br />Twentymile Coal Company has received authorization from Colorado Department of Public Health and <br />Environment to include sulfuric acid and Sodium Hydroxide in the treatment process. Please be aware <br />that this treatment is a variance from the Foidel Creek Mine permit. Rules 2.05.6(3)(a) and (b)(ii) <br />require that the permit "contain a detailed description of measures to be taken during and after mining <br />activities to ensure protection of the hydrologic balance, including the quality of surface water." Please <br />include a description of the chemicals being used ,the treatment plan and methods of storage. This <br />information should be incorporated into the permit via a minor revision. <br />discharge with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Envirortment. The report is in <br />compliance with Rule 4.05.13(2)(a)(iii). <br />Twentymile Coal Company has kept the Division apprised of the water quality conditions at the Fish <br />Creek Borehole and Twentymile Coal Company continues to coordinate their efforts with the Colorado <br />Department of Public Health and Environment. Cotttintted communication regazding Fish Creek <br />Borehole water quality shall be necessary.
