It is an extension of an old gravel pit which the
Rod and Gun Club of Holyoke owns. Presently, it is in grass cover, which
is apparently being used [o Bold the topsoil in place.
The area lies in a bend of the Frenchman River, which in this area is a
very narrow, intermittent stream, lined with a very thin belt of willows and
a few cottonwoods. The entire mine will consist of between nine and ten
acres, of which probably four to Eive acres will actually be mined. The
only place the creek bed and trees will be disturbed is placement of. a
temporary fill and pipe for crossing the creek with a haul road. The three
feet of overburden will be stripped and stockpiled [o be used in reclamation
• of the mine at the conclusion of the project,
Reclamation will involve the backsloping of the banks on a four to one ratio,
then replacing the topsoil and seeding it with the same grass mixture that
the DOH uses on borrow areas in Eastern Colorado.
Impact on Wildlife in the area will be minlmal, as the area gets rather
heavy traffic at present from the rifle and pistol range in use in the
old pit.
There are no known threatened or endangered species in the area.
DB:lf
cc: Joe Intermill
Pile
~ow•A•ra
