Cottony <br />Division Director <br />Natural Resource Trustee <br />The Division received your letter dated March 15, 2005 regarding the topsoil shortage at the Camilletti <br />Pit, Permit No. M-1987-164. <br />In your letter it is stated that the remaining areas to be stripped and mined is approximately 8.6 acres. <br />Using 24" of topsoil thickness over the 8.6 acres of future stripping produces approximately 26,000 CY. <br />This infers that 24" of topsoil is available on site to be stripped. According to the 112 Permit <br />Conversion Application dated July 3, 2000, only 6"oftopsoil is available for salvage. The permit states, <br />"recent exploration test pits in the southern expansion area indicate an average topsoil thickness of six <br />inches...this is consistent with the original 1987 SCS soil investigation and historic mining in the pit." <br />A copy of the mining plan is attached. <br />The operator will need to further demonstrate that the additional 18" of material to be stripped in the <br />undisturbed area is adequate for topsoil redistribution and revegetation of the site. Such demonstration <br />may include a standard soil analysis showing pH, SAR, fertility and texture of the B-horizon. Fertilizer <br />or other soil amendments maybe required as a result of the soil tests. Any changes or amendments to <br />the soil will need to be filed as a technical revision to the permit. <br />The Division's correction action due date noted in the inspection report is June 1, 2005. Please address <br />this issue prior to this date.
