The species is found in Colorado during the nesting season.
Nesting habitat is in shortgrass prairie or shrub steppe areas away from water that are
relatively flat and have a vegetation height ofless than 4 inches (USFWS, 1999). These
conditions are found in areas that are heavily grazed by livestock, prairie dogs (Cynomys
sp.) or other herbivores (USFWS, 1999). The year-round pasture on the proposed Stroh
pit site is considered potential mountain plover nesting habitat. Presence/absence surveys
for mountain plover were conducted during the May 2002 nesting season. No mountain
plovers were found.
Black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is a candidate for listing as threatened.
Candidate species are species for which the USFWS has determined that listing is
warranted but precluded because of other listing activities. Four black-tailed prairie dogs
were observed on the site during the last mountain plover survey. Because they were not
observed previously it is believed they had just moved into the area.
H:\Stroh\word\DMG\Exhibit H a.doc
