The area
where the site is proposed is part of a larger piece of valuable winter range for deer and elk. The site provides
important habitat for mountain lions, bobcats, and other wildlife as well. Plants at the site are composed primarily
of pinion juniper, with scattered mountain mahogany,;abbitbrush, big sagebrush, yucca, and other forbs, providing
both cover and forage for wildlife. I did not see any non-native vegetation at the site.
While the loss of habitat at the proposed site will not have a significant effect on wildlife, the increase in human
activity in this area will create more stress on the azea's big game herds. The Division of Wildlife recommends that
if the site is to be developed as a rock quarry that the concentration of activity is restricted to the summer and eazly
fall. If the quarry operates during winter/spring we recommend that the activity occur during daylight hours.
These recommendations will minimize the impact on the deer and elk herds that frequent the azea during the winter
and spring. Also, the native vegetation that exists at the proposed site is a valuable mixture for wildlife. If
developed, care should be taken during the reclamation of the site to replace the natural vegetation. We would
recommend that weeds be controlled to prevent non-native species that maybe introduced while the quarry is in
operation.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this proposal.
Sincer~el~y~
Bill deVergie
Area Wildlife Manager -Montrose
. e -,

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Philip James, Chair.
