-16-

MITIGATION MEASURES
Of the two W. R. Grace 5 Co. prooosa'.s, the Coiowyo Mine offers
the best opportunities for paleontological discoveries. This is
because of the large quantity of rock that shall be moved during the
thirty year plan of [he Mine. For this reason a two-fold mitigation
plan is presented.
First, because it will be the miners who will encounter the fos-
sils, they should be informed that it is important that such fossils
as logs, stumps, seeds, leaves, dinosaur bones, turtleshells, fish skel-
etons, and any other fossil that seems unusual be reported [o the proper
personnel so that the University of Colorado Museum or the United States
Geological Survey may be notified. Because a great deal of information •
is obtained from a fossil lying in place, if at all possible, the fos-
sil should not be moved, until after the proper personnel have studied
it. It is only by this method that the chances of losing valuable
fossils and data will be reduced.
Second, a paleobotanist should be permitted to make annual visits
to collect from the tailings and mine face, and to study sections standing
at [hat time. This will insure a minimal loss of stratigraphic control
and allow recovery of specimens.
It is believed [his two-fold plan will not result in any major de-
lays of operations at the Colowyo Mine and yet insure that only a minimal
of paleontologic data be lost.
•
