-14-
Mine property. If this were indeed the case then there is definitely
just grounds for further investigations to determine the flora and its
paieoecological significance. This new investigation should be conducted
by a paleobotanist during the removal of the overburden to expose the
coal seams. Part of the study should take place with several undisturbed
sections to formulate some type of stratigraphic control. Another part
of the study can be carried on with little interference with mining
activities as this would take place in the waste rock piles and would
involve searching for specimens. It will be necessary to maintain some
type of stratigraphic control throughout the thirty year life of the
mine as it is possible that [here were subtle changes in the flora during
the Cretaceous. Because of the immence volume of rock that will be
removed yearly examinations should be made to insure that specimens not
be lost nor that there is a loss in stratigraphic control. There is an
enormous wealth of data available for study in the Colowyo Mine [hat
would have gone by unnoticed if this study had not taken place and it
shows the need for similar investigations for all Federal lands to be
sure that no data of the past be lost.

•
l J
