-4-
l~
DESCRIPTION OF METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Prior to actual work in the field, two days were spent in back-
ground reading to acquire an understanding of the geology of north-
western Colorado and in map compilation. As no detailed geologic
maps of the area were available, the data of Mott (1962) on a 1:250,000
base sheet and Sears (1925) were transfered [o [he Axial, Castor Gulch,
Hamilton, Horse G Gulch, Monument Butte, Ninemile Gap, and Round Bot-
tom 7 112 minute topographical maps. It is estimated that the accuracy
was + 100 feet vertically and 1/4 mile horizontally.
Collecting procedures in the field involved locating the major rack
exposures, first within the confines of the Lolowyo Mine property and
second, within the 1000 foot wide railroad corridors. Fossils were •
searched for in the float and in the outcrops. If a fossil was found,
careful attention was given to [he area to determine the extent of the
fossil bed. Each locality was plotted on the correct 7 1/2 minute
topographical sheet.
The method of locality designation was to use the initials of the
appropriate 7 1/2 minute map and to assign the locality a number. By
this method the third locality of the Round Bottom Quandrangle is
designated RB-3 in all maps acid notes.
Shortly after the start of the field work it became apparent [hat
there was a lack of suitable rock exposed in [he study area. Most of
the land it was found was covered by scrub oak, sage, and grasses.
Because of this the only major fossil locality is A-4 where mining •
