-40-
SMF435 and SMF444 are being recommended for nomination.
6.2 SPECIFIC MITIGATION MEASURES •
6.2.1 The Colowyo Mine Site
The two prehistoric sites, SMF401 and SMF404, should be tested as
part of the mitigation program. In particular, the collection made at
SMF401 is probably not representative of the amount and kinds of cultural
material present at the site, since heavy brush cover made surface
examination of the area difficult. Mitigation of the historic sites was
not recommended by the historical consultant.
6.2.2 Railroad Route A
All prehistoric sites in the right of way of Route A should be tested
during the initial phase of the mitigation program with special attention
paid to SMF409, 423, 434, 436 and 444. Controlled surface collections are
recommended at all of the above sites except SMF409, which is a rock
shelter. It is also recommended that test excavations be conducted in
the SMF435 rock shelter, even though it lies outside the right of way,
because of the potential importance of the site and the possibility of
indirect adverse impacts on the site. •
The historical consultant has recommended that measures be taken
16
to insure the preservation of the structures of the Tom Iles Ranch (SMF'4,35).
A complete record of the pictographs at SMF435, consisting of both
photographs and drawings, is recommended.
6.2.3 Railroad Route B
If Route B is selected as the railroad corridor, it is recommended
that all 9 prehistoric sites in the right of way be tested as the initial
step of the mitigation program.
The same recommendations made regarding sites SMF426 and SMF435 in
Section 6.2.2 apply here since Routes A and B have the same .rights of way
through Milk Creek Canyon.
6.2.4 Railroad Route C
If Route C is selected, all of the 20 to 22 prehistoric sites in the
right of way should be tested as the first step of the mitigation program.
Controlled surface collections should be made at SMF444.
u
