-z7-
liminary assessment of the archeological resources of the railroad right of
way and was recorded during the present investigation as IF17 since little •
cultural material could be observed on the surface.
It was discovered only recently that Calvin Jennings conducted an
archeological inventory of Bureau of Land Management lease lands on Iles
mountain several weeks after we completed our field survey. His survey over-
lapped the right of way of Railroad Route A in the vicinity of Round Bottom
and several of our sites were also recorded by Jennings as sites. With his
permission, I have included copies of his site forms in this report and have
noted the site locations on Quad maps. The pertinent sites recorded by
Jennings are SMF322, 325, 327, 330, 335, 338, 339, and 340. A Legible copy
of SPfF330 unfortunately could not be received in time for inclusion in the
report. It is hoped that better coordination by supervisory agencies in
the future will eliminate further confusion and duplication of effort.
4.4 RESULTS OF THE CULTURAL RESOURCES INVENTORY
4.4.1 Number and Kind of Sites Inventoried
A total of 72 sites and 65 isolated finds were recorded during the
inventory of the Colowyo Mine site and the railroad rights of way. In •
addition, Jennings recorded one site (SMF325) during his Bureau of Land
Management inventory on Iles Mountain that was missed by our crew and which
is located within the right of way of Route A. Ten of the sites (SMF403,
405, 426, 439, 454, 455, 456, 464, 469, and 474) are historic structures
or the remains of structures, 3 sites (SMF409, 435, and 463) are rockshelters,
and the remaining sites are classified as open lithic sites, including the
site recorded by Jennings.
Hearths or firepits were found at a number of open sites and a possible
hearth was observed in profile in the SMF435 rockshelter. The hearths are
features of particular importance since it is highly probable that at least
some of them contain the carbonized remnants of seeds and other plant materials.
Analysis of their contents would consequently provide valuable information
concerning the kinds of food resources exploited and seasonal patterns of
occupation. C-14 dating of the carbonized plant materials would provide
a chronological framework more accurate than could be obtained from the
artifact analyses.
•
