-6-
levelling techniques recently introduced in cotton growing areas of the
• Mississippi flood plain in Arkansas will eliminate all archeological sites
on the flood plain within 25 years. Closer to home, the need to develop
new energy reserves has accelerated the danger of destruction of archeological
resources in the coal rich areas and oil shale regions of western Colorado.
An individual met in Craig during the field investigation offered the
opinion that "...if you've seen one Indian site, you've seen them all".
On the contrary, no Indian site is exactly like any other and each has the
potential for adding to our knowledge of the past.
It is not suggested that these developments be stopped but that adequate
measures be taken to preserve or recover those archeological resources that
still exist. Archeological excavation also destroys sites and any long-term
conservation planning must provide for the preservation of sites that can be
excavated in the future using techniques and approaches now unavailable.
u
•
