d-18-1997 2: i5PM FR~ • p 3
Gilaest series soils are described by the Natural Resources Conserntion Service (MRCS) as
having rapid permeability and low available water capacity. Root zones typicaIIy extend to 60
inches or more. The mining/reclamation phwsindicate that the overburden wr71 be removed to
sandstone and 4"-8" of growth media, with an average depth of 6", will be applied over the entire
site. It seems highly improbable to CDOW that a productive and diverse post-mine vegetative
community can be established using the current reclamation prescription. We would strongly
encourage DMG to ro-assess the reclamation plan. CDOW would advise the applicant to consult
the MRCS in developing a plan which addresses our concerns about gowth media application as
well as erosion control on newly seeded sites.
In cnmmary ~ CDOW has serious concerns regarding the proposed reclamation plan. Ifthe plan 1S
adopted as proposed, CROW would anticipate long-term negative impacts resuhing from this
action. Our office would strongly encourage DMG to evaluate this application with respect to
these issues. We appreciate the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed action. yf
you have any questions concerning these comments, please give me a caIl at (719) 561-4909.
Sincerely
tis Kloster
habitat Biologist
CROW; Pueblo
ce: harper, Goforth, Trujillo, Vehude, Desilet
