. Soil Unit 86- Vona fine sandy loam, 1 to 5% slopes. This deep, well drained soil is on
undulating uplands. It formed in eolian sand. The native vegetation is mainly grass.
Elevation is 5500 to 6200 feet. The average annual precipitation is 12.to 15 inches, the
average annual temperature is 50 to 54 degrees F, and the average frost-free period is 130
to 160 days.
Constantly, the surface layer is light brownish gray fine sandy loam about 6inches thick.
The subsoil is sandy loam about 26 inches thick. The substratum to a depth of 60 inches
or more is sandy loam. The soil is neutral to a depth of 17 inches and moderately alkaline
below that depth.
In addition to the above soil about 10% Olney sandy loam can be found in the
drainageways. Permeability of this Vona soil is moderately rapid. Available water capacity
is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is slow to medium, and
the hazard of water erosion is slight to high. Erosion due to wind is considered very high
on ridges because of the short, undulating slopes and droughtiness.
This unit is used as rangeland in the permit boundary. The potential plant community on
this unit is mainly blue grams, needleandthread, Indian ricegrass and sideoats grams. The
average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 1000 pounds per acre. If the
condition of the range deteriorates, sand dropseed, threeawn, and Russian-thistle
increase.
C~
•
