This sand and gravel open pit mining
operation is conducted on lands owned by William S. and
Beverly H. Caldwell and Dudley E. and Doris Sims. The
operator leased the property in January 1974. Prior to
commencement of mining activities by Valco in 1974, there
were no mining operations on the subject lands. Sand and
gravel mining had been conducted by other parties in
several locations north and west of the property.
Valco began its operations in the northern part of the
area (see map Exhibit D-1, Stage O; also see map Exhibit C)
but quickly found sand and gravel lenses thinning out to
no sand and gravel. In 1976 operations were moved to the
southern part of the lease where a hilly area (see map
Exhibits C and D-1, Stage I) gave promise of a thicker
deposit and more economical operations. Core drill tests
conducted in 1977 proved a much thicker deposit underlying
the western portion of the lease.
The core information indicates overburden varying from
0 to 9 feet. The sand and gravel deposit varies between
4 and 33 feet. It is a bench deposit well above the water
table. Thus, water will not be encountered during excava-
tion.
The operator plans to remove approximately 50,000 tons
of pit material annually. Based on this information, mining
stages have been estimated for five years in length, each
5
