~ ~~ ~
WESTERN SLOPE CARBON, INC. ~-- -
MIKE OFFICE-SOMERSET, COLORADO 81434
303929-5231
June 17, 1980
rir. Tom Pike
Office of Surface Mining
Brooks Tower
1020 - 15th Street
Denver, Colorado 80202
RE: GROUND WATER MONITORING EAST [ C,g:E
Dear Mr. Pike:
In order to comply with special stipulation No. 1, attached to the Coal Mining
and Reclamation Plan for Hawk's Nest Mine, Federal Coal Lease No. C-27103, I
have been making weekly inspections of the 1st East Mains. I apologize for
being late with this report. I delayed writing it until I received results
of some water analyses which were lost when the laboratory company moved.
There are no measurable inflows of ground water in this area of the mine.
There is a small amount of seepage from the roof, floor and coal face through-
• out the section. This seepage is slightly less in the southern entries, and
gradually dries up out by the face. The section also seems to be drying up
as we proceed to the east. Sump entries driven to the north have more water.
I estimate the total inflow at less than one GPM.
Sampling ground water in this area is difficult because of the small amount of
inflow in any one area. Samples were taken of drips from the roof, and from
ruts and sumps which had not been recently disturbed by mining traffic.
I have had seven samples analysed to date. They are sample numbers 15, 16, 17,
55, 56, 57, 58 on the attached sheets. All samples are much higher in all
quantities tested for, than is water from the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
Sample numbers one through six are of river water. Water taken from 1st Eas[
Mains shows a much closer correspondence with water taken from drill holes,
sample numbers 12, 13, 14; and also corresponds with ground water descriptions
given in studies of this area (Price and Waddel 1973, Price and Arrow 1974, and
Brogdon and Giles, 1977).
The roof in Lhis area is a massive sand stone. There are a few fractures,
trending gradually SE as shown on the attached map. Water seepage is not asso-
ciated with these fractures.
r.
A E U O S I D I A R V O F M O a T M W E S T [ M E R C Y C O M P A N Y
