4 - 66
DENSITY
• Shadscale is the most abundant shrub in this vegetation type with a density of 1,790 shrubs
per acre. Broom snakeweed is also common with 881 shrubs per acre. Total shrub density is
2,987 shrubs per acre. Average shrub height for all shrubs is 51 centimeters. See Table
4.5-8.
RICHNESS AND EQUITABILITY
Of the three vegetation types sampled, species richness is lowest in the Shadscale
Shrubland (ndex = 11.90). This is probably related to the harsh environmental conditions
existing on these steep slopes. Equitability is also relatively low (ndex = 0.73). See Table
4.5-5.
4.5.10.3 JUNIPER WOODLAND
A Juniper Woodland occurs on the steep, north and west facing slopes and the ridgetops
surrounding the McClave Mine. This vegetation type occurs mainly on the Tomorthent rock
• outcrop complex although there are inclusions of Havre loam, a deep, well drained soil. Juniper
Woodland is the climatic climax for these environmental conditions.
COVER
This vegetation type contains 41 species of plants. These include: 2 trees, 12 shrubs and
subshrubs, 11 graminoids, 14 forts, and 2 succulents. Tree cover dominates with 26.0
percent cover. Total vegetation cover is 45.3 percent. Litter, soil, and rock are relatively
abundant with 23.3, 17.0, and 14.5 percent cover, respectively. See Table 4.5.9.
Utah juniper is the dominant tree species providing 20.8 percent cover. Pinyon pine Pinus
edulis is also common to a lesser degree (5.3 percent cover).
Major graminoids in this woodland are: Salina wildrye (6.3 percent cover), Indian ricegrass
(2.0 percent cover), and mutton bluegrass, Poa fendleriana (2.0 percent cover). Minor grasses
are cheatgrass and Sandberg bluegrass.
Shrub cover is relatively sparse, but more common shrubs are mountain mahogany,
Cerococarpusmontanus(5.3 percent cover), and Gamble oak, Guercusgambe/ii(10 percent
• cover). Less common shrubs include Utah service berry, Ame/anchierutahensis, big sagebrush,
and mountain pepperweed.
M~ Volume 1 4.29-96
