_-
• SUMMARY OF OPERATION
The Latham Pit is a source of sand and gravel located adjacent to the
Colorado River about one-fourth mile south of the Town of DeBeque,
Colorado, in Mesa County.
The volume of material available is approximately 2 million cubic yards
on 69 acres. It is planned to use this source for about 10 years. Usage
per year will, of course, depend upon demand for construction materials in
the area.
Mining will begin at the northeast end of the pit area and progress south
and westward in increments. Excavation and processing will be intermittent j
through the 10 year life. Dewatering will be required to excavate full depth
of usable material. The area to be mined will be trenched and dewatered to
minimize particulates in the discharge. Excavation will begin with clearing
of brush and trees and stockpiling of overburden. ~
Sand and gravel will be excavated with a backhoe or front end loader, placed
in trucks and hauled to the plant and stockpile at the east edge of the
area for processing. Oversized materials will be left on the pit floor
to enhance the reclaimed area as a fishery,
Two islands will be left in the pit area as wildlife habitat. Pit slopes
will be left somewhat irregular with slopes no steeper than 3:1 (3 horizontal
to 1 vertical) to a depth of 10 feet below the final water elevation and
2:1 from that point to the pit bottom. A 175 foot undisturbed area is to
be left between the pit and the Colorado River. Fifty feet is to be left
between the overflow channel and the pit. The backwater area is to be
left undisturbed.
Overburden will be placed over the slopes and reseeded with a mixture as
recommended by the Soil Conservation Service.
