Box 1949
Fort Collins, CO 80522
RE: Goodwin Gypsum Quarry
Dear Mr. Thompson:
The proposed Goodwin Gypsum Quarry in Sections 7 ~ 18, T11N, R69W
is rock outcrop and shallow foothill range site. The grasses in the
deeper soil on the edge of the proposed mining area are blue grama,
western wheatgrass, side oats grama, fringed sage and annuals with a
507, ground cover. The grasses in the major area, which is rock outcrop,
are Little bluestem, side-oats grama, needlegrass, Griffith F;rass, In-
dian ricegrass, yucca and annuals. The grasses constitute ].0°/, of the
ground cover in this area. Browse species of mountain mahogany occupy
another 10-157 of the ground cover and remaining 75% is barE~ rock.
As the mining area is to be less than 3:1 slopes, there• will be
no problems in reseeding steep slopes. The fine material from the over-
burden and waste should be used to cover the mine area. This should
be smoothened and broadcasted with the following seeding recommendation,
and then raked to cover if rocks prevent drilling.
Little bluestem 5 lbs.
Side-oats grama 6 lbs.
Indian ricegrass 8 lbs.
True mountain mahogany '~ lb.
Pure Live Seed/Acre
~~ ~~
u n n n
.~ ~~ „
AFT
Seed after frost is out of the ground and before April 15th. As the mate-
rial for reseeding will have little nutrients, it would be advisable to
have samples analyzed for fertilizing rates. In reseeding areas more than
'~-acre in size, mulching is recommended after seeding. This is done to
conserve moisture, reduce runoff and wind erosion, and help establish
plant cover. The normal rate of straw or grass hay should be 4,000 Lbs.
per acre which should be spreaded uniformly. The straw should be anchored
by crimping; or, if rocks prevent that, then with netting or asphalt prod-
ucts which is blown with the straw or sprayed after. Reseeded areas should
be protected from grazing until the grass is established.
Sincerely,
District Conservationist
..t~:•aflt.l ,~~.~ ., fi .,i ..
