Section 2.05.3(9) Underground Development Waste
A narrative describing the proposed disposal methods and sites for
placement of underground development waste and excess spoil
generated at surface disturbances by surface operations and facilities.
The present underground development waste disposal site is
located in and around an old strip pit on the east side of the
present and proposed surface operations. Refer to the Proposed
Surface Disturbance Map, 2.05.3(2)(b)-1. The majority of the
material to be deposited at this site will be unmarketable material
mined underground, consisting of rock from the floor and roof, and
coal. Occasions to generate such waste are: grading floor or roof
for clearance, unintentional roof falls, accidental mining of
roof or floor, cleanup, and other operations causing a high ash
content in the coal. The cut-off in ash content depends upon
the market.
The waste is shipped on the same belt as the coal, but is
shipped at different times to allow segregation on the surface.
The waste is temporarily stockpiled in the yard area.
The amount of waste generated is estimated to be 15~ of annual
coal production in the Red Canyon #1 Mine and 58 of the annual
production in the Red Canyon R2 Mine, 16,000 cubic yards and
14,000 cubic yards, respectively. Refer to Section 2.05.3(1) for
mining projections.
The soil resource information is given in Section 2.04.9.
Limited topsoil is available due to the previous disturbance and
the shallow topsoil depths. Sample T-2, Table 2.04.9(1)(b)-2,
was taken to represent the topsoil chemistry in the area, and O-6
and O-7, Table 2.04.9(1)(b)-2, were taken to represent the over-
burden available for nontoxic cover and possible topsoil replacement.
The vegetation resource information is given in Section 2.04.10.
The surrounding area is primarily covered with cedar and associated
undergrowth.
The site is drained into the disturbed drainage system, which
will route all runoff through a sediment pond. Refer to Sections
REVISED November 15, 1983 121
