Box 1153
Meeker, CO 81641
Dear Mr.Joy:
I have visited the site of the proposed Rio Blanco County Red Wash Gravel Pit just across the draw from
County Road 116.The site is a steep hill side which drains into the East Fork of Red Wash. Vegetation consists
primarily of Pinion/Juniper trees with under lying sagebrush, service berry, perennial grasses, and annual grasses.
The site is in the area designated by the Division of Wildlife as primarily winter range for both mule deer and elk.
However, both species can also be found in the area during the summer months with elk having the largest numbers
during this time. Mountain lions are also found in the area, and I have had reports of black bears bung sighted near the
site. Small game species in the area include but are not limited to cotton tailed rabbits, jack rabbits, gray squirrels,
coyotes, and bobcats. Many non-game mammal, bird, and reptile species can also be found on or near the site.
Based upon the amount of surrounding habitat available to all wildlife species, the pit should not pose a threat
to the wildlife populations within the area. I would strongly suggest that some browse species(winterfat)be included in
the revegatation seed mixture and that care be taken to prevent increased erosion in Red Was by run off from the pit
area.
I would also suggest that operation of the pit be limited to the summer months, when big game populations are at their
lowest.
ere ,
"
Mark W.
