The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co.
A ChevronTezaco Company
4601 DTC Boulevard, Sizlh Floor, Denver, CO 80237 ~ Phone (303 930-3600
December 29, 2004
Mr. Jeff Coombe
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80246-1530
RE: CDPS Permit No. CO-0032638
Dear Mr. Coombe,
R~~ ~`l ~.s~~'A
SAN 0 J LG~i~ .
Division of Minerals and Geology
In response to your letter of December 20, 2004 indicating a violation of permit
conditions for outfall 007T in October, 2004 a brief explanation is in order. A person in
the consulting company responsible For this documentation who was unfanliar with
P&M's pernut and unfamiliar with the details behind the water sample analysis process
was given the responsibility of filling out the reports. I, as the signatory party for P&M,
did not catch the discrepancy. Method 245.1, used for analyzing for mercury, has a lower
detection limit of 0.0002 mg/1. The documentation from the lab indicates mercury at
0.0002 mg/l. This has been the case since at least 1999 which were the oldest records to
which I have ready access for review. Mercury has historically been reported as < 0.0002
mg/1 with no exceedence. However, since this information was not known to the person
filling out the form, they assumed an exceedence had occurred.
Enclosed is an amended DMR for outfa11007T for October, 2004 which accurately
reflects the water quality analysis. In addition; an amended DMR for outfa11004T for•
October, 2004 is included as I found mercury analytical data was not included at all iri the
original submittal.
Outfall information for November has these same issues but has not }'et been submitted to
your office. I will make the necessary corrections prior to submittal.
>f you have other questions or additional response on this issue is required, please contact
me at (303) 930-4013.
Sincerely,
Steven E.
