~xk~b~} ~
~ ~
SHAVANO SOIL CONSERVATION DISTRICT
do Leater Jones
60489 Cernatlon Road
Olathe, Colorado 81425
Pat Warren
Montrose County Planner
Montrose, Colorado
July 15, 1987
This report was developed with information provided by the Soil
Conservation Service. It concerns vegetation and revegetation of
the gravel extraction area located on the John Soderquist Ranch,
SE 1/4, SE 1/4, of Section 29, T48N, R6W•
The present cover vegetation on site consists mainly of some weedy
species, foxtail barley, quakgrass, wooley mullen, cheatgrass,
stinging nettles, Kentucky bluegrass, and narrowleaf cottonwoods
and willows.
The off site species are Gambel oakbrush, snowberry, lupine, service-
berry, hairy goldaster, big sagebrush, western wheatgrass, and
bottlebrush squirreltail•
Since this is a re-opening of an older pit, no topsoil remains to
scrape off and stockpile. However, there is enough soil mixed into
the gravel to provide revegetation of the site.
i
Our recommendations for revegetation would be to reduce all slopes
to at least 2:1, 3:1 would be even better. After this is done, seeding
can take place.
A mixture of smooth brome grass, orchard grass and clover or alfalfa
would work real well for this area. Since this only covers 1 to 1.5
acres, 15 lbs. of Manchar smooth brome, 2 lbs. of Latar orchard
grass and 1 lb• of either red clover or alfalfa would be sufficeint
to reseed the pit. The seed, after broadcasting, should be covered
slightly by dragging a harrow or something similar over the site.
Seeding should take place sometime after October 15• This will
eed from germinating and then winter-killing-
These recommendations should
the site.
