04-03-1996 14:01 303 447 2999 P.05
Observatlorts
• Water Treatment Plant Filter Fines in general I~robably
vary with the watershed serving the treatment plant, but those
from the Boulder Betasso Plant provided excellent seedbed
material. Best growth seemed to occur where it was present as
a 2 to 6 inch layer over the clay subsoil. In 1995, the clay
subsoil performed the function of water storage very vvell. But
areas where the clay was on the surface (without topciressing)
and also areas with deeper filter fines topdressing haci
distinctly less development of plant cover by fall.
• The Soil GuardT'" bonded fiber matrix performed the task
of protecting the seedbed well even under conditions of
historic record high rainfall. Though relatively expen:~ive, its
use on the steep, exposed talus buttress slope seems to have
been a good decision to ensure the highest probability of
successful vegetation establishment.
• Extraordinarily favorable moisture conditions of spring
1995 caused a very high rate of germination/seedling
establishment that prevented weed establishment andl carried
the young stand through a relatively hot and dry summer.
