Crdtw-af Sarver for Five Core Holes for the West Efk Mirte Dm Fork Ezplor¢tiort Area
were to be evaluated for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (Register) under the Criteria for
Eligibility (36 CFR 60.4 a-d). Register eligibility is evaluated in terms of the integrity of the resource, and: (a)
its association with significant events, or patterns in history or prehistory; (b) its association with the specific
contributions of individuals significant in our past; (c) its engineering, artistic, or architectural values; or (d) its
information potential for important research questions in history or prehistory.
Prehistoric resources are most ofren evaluated under Criterion d for their potential to yield information
important in prehistory. Significant information potential in a prehistoric site requires that the site contain
intact cultural deposits or discrete activity areas that can be securely associated with a temporal period or
discrete cultural group. The potential for intact deposits or culturalltempoml associations maybe inferred from
surface evidence of cultural features or undisturbed Holocene deposits, and the presence of temporally or
culturally diagnostic artifacts. Historic resources maybe evaluated under any of the Criteria. However, in the
absence of structural features or documented association with significant historic events or the important
contributions of significant persons in history, historical resources more than 50 years old are evaluated under
essentially the same criteria as prehistoric resources.
Based on information available from files searches and previous research experience in the area, Greystone
anticipated that prehistoric and historic cultural resources would be sparse in this rugged terrain away from
permanent water. Previously recorded cultural resources in the general area have included limited prehistoric
materials along Minnesota Creek, a historic irrigation ditch, and a segment of historic pole fence.
METHODS
The cultural resource inventory of the proposed core hole locations and access was conducted by pedestrian
transects spaced 15 to 30 meters apart. Transects were irregular because of brush, trees, and fallen trees.
Ideally, a 10-acre block would be inspected around each of the proposed locations. However, smaller aeeas
were surveyed because of nearby steep slopes and dense vegetation. As much of the gently to moderately
sloping area around each of the staked core hole locations was inspected as was feasible. This ranged from
about 3.8 to about 6.7 acres. Transects stopped at dense trees and brush, slopes greater than 50 percent grade,
or existing maintained roads. However, dense trees and brush were inspected to the extent feasible for
proposed access.
Core hole CCC will be located in the NE/NW/NE of Section 11, T14S, R90W. Access will be via an existing
vehicle road from FS 711 approximately 600 feet to the north. The survey block for core hole CCC consisted
of an irregular area of about 3.8 acres on moderate to steep northeast slopes. This core hole location is
approximately 400 feet northwest of the location inspected in 1999 (Spath 1999b). The proposed core hole is
staked in a small, open azea; within well-established aspen with an open brush and fern understory and
moderate deadfall. Both sides of the access road were also inspected for approximately 600 feet.
Core hole DDD will be located in the NE1NElNE of Section 12, T 145, R90W. Access will be via FS 711. An
irregulaz block of about 6.1 acres on the north side of FS 711 was surveyed. This core hole location is
approximately 500 feet northeast of the location inspected in 1999 (Spath 1999b). The core hole location is on
a gently-sloping bench with steep slopes to the east and west. It is inwell-established aspen with a high brush
and forb understory and scattered conifers. There is a moderate quantity of aspen deadfall in the survey block.
Core hole EEE will be located in the NW/NWISE (close to the center) of Section 1, T14S, R90W. Access will
be via a temporary road from FS 711-3B to the east. An irregular block of about 5.8 acres was surveyed. The
staked core hole location is in a flat azea of low saplings, woody brush, grasses, and forbs at the west edge of
Coal Creek Mesa. The access passes through aspen and waist- to shoulder-high brush and forbs.
210-Dry Fork Core Holes Rpt_(8.11.04)
