INTRODUCTION
Alteration of alluvial groundwater regimes occurs quite
often, 'yet few attempts have been made to document
the effects on riparian ecosystems. We describe the
structLUal response of mature cottonwood trees to a
decline in the groundwater table associated with sand
excav~~tion from a Front Range ephemeral stream.
