CONCLUSIONS
1. ThE~ excavation of sand from the channel rapidly
lowered the groundwater in the adjacent riparian
zone (4 feet to date).
2. ThE, mining exposed groundwater, resulting in
increased surface flow downstream.
3. A decline in the water table >_ 2 feet stresses mature
stands of cottonwood trees.
4. Initial indications of stress were reductions in leaf
area and branch die back.
