<br />CONCLUSIONS <br />1. ThE~ excavation of sand from the channel rapidly <br />lowered the groundwater in the adjacent riparian <br />zone (4 feet to date). <br />2. ThE, mining exposed groundwater, resulting in <br />increased surface flow downstream. <br />3. A decline in the water table >_ 2 feet stresses mature <br />stands of cottonwood trees. <br />4. Initial indications of stress were reductions in leaf <br />area and branch die back. <br />
