;`
Since stability of the fill is a critical concern to Colowyo, the twelve Streeter fill survey
monuments were surveyed immediately the next day, August 13, 1997 and found to be
unchanged. We also conducted a spring and seep survey at the 6,800' level and at the toe of the
fill to determine if any changes had occurred. No springs or seeps were noted. The water level in
the Streeter pond has been lowered for dredging and there was no evidence of inflow from the fill.
We checked the pH of the water in both wells and found it to be around 7.14. The pH
indicates the water is not acidic which could have contributed to a casing failure.
We checked conductivity in both wells and found both wells to contain water with
conductivities in excess of 4300 mS. This indicates the water is from the same source and typical
of water found in a mine spoils environment.
Colowyo is currently evaluating the situation and monitoring the water levels in the wells.
Our plan is to bring in a camera capable of being lowered into the deep well to determine the
source of water and to check the condition of the casing, perforations, etc. If we find the north
well to be capable of continued use our preferred solution is to install a suitable liner into the north
well and grout between the liner and the steel casing to seal the leak. The liner will also be
perforated at the bottom so as to continue to function as the monitor well. If we find that the steel
casing is no longer capable of continued service, the north well may have to be sealed,
abandoned and a new monitor well installed.
We will keep the Division informed as to the status of the situation. Please contact us if
you have any questions concerning the matter.
Sincerely,
~ ~~,
mes A. Kiger
xc: J. Harmon
M. Gibson
S. Hinkemeyer
J. Garcia
2
