Dept. of Natural Resources
TO: HARRIS SHERMAN, SECRETARY, MINED LAND RECLAMATION
FROM: C. J. KUIPER, STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: WHITEWATER BUILDING MATERIALS CORP. - EGGAR, ADAMS AND
WHITEWATER PITS -MESA COUNTY -APPLICATIONS FOR MINING
AND RECLAMATION PERMITS
As requested by your office, we have reviewed the applications for three
sand and gravel operations near Grand Junction. Each application contained
nearly identical information concerning water resources. We recommend
that the Board request the following additional information for each pit;
1. Exhibit G of each application states that "there is no use
of water during the mining stages nor during the reclama-
tion phases". However, the Emissions Permit for each
operation is subject to the conditions that "watering of
all roadways, equipment and stock pile areas, and surge
tank and fogging nozzles on both crushers and screens"
are required. This discrepancy should be resolved before
permit approval by requi-ring information on water require-
ments, sources of water, and consumptive use for dust
control and any other industrial use of water.
2. The reclamation of each pit will leave one or more lakes
surrounded by phreatophytic cottonwood, Russian olive,
and tamarisk trees. The following lake surface areas will
be formed: Eggar Pit - 51.4 acres, Adams Pit - 12,3 and
37.9 acres, and Whitewater Pit - 56.11 and 207.32 acres.
This combined surface area of 365.03 acres will evaporate
