eh <br />ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC. <br />• <br />CHAPTER L: ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES/FISH AND WILDLIFE <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br />Northern Coal Company is required by Federal and State Regulations to <br />establish a baseline inventory of the fish and wildlife, both potential and observed, <br />which use the azeas influenced by the four underground coal mines - Rienau No. 2 <br />(G-Seam) Mine, Northern No. 1 (FF-Seam), No. 2 (P-Seam) and No. 3 (J-Seam) Mine. <br />This report is intended to meet those requirements. <br />Northern Coal Company received a letter dated May 29, 1979 from Mr. <br />L. Ronel Finley, Coal Coordinator, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, indicating the <br />Bio-Resources, Inc. wildlife proposal was sufficient to fulfiII the baseline wiIdIife <br />information requirements. Northern Coal Company received a letter dated June 7, <br />• 1979 to the same effect from Mr. Al Whitaker, Wildlife Program Specialist, <br />Colorado Division of Wildlife. On July 18, 1979, NCC fulfilled the OSM consultation <br />requirement Section 783.20(b) in a meeting attended by NCC, Bio-Resources, Inc., <br />Mr. Rade Orell of CMLRB and Ms. Shirley Lindsey of OSM. A letter of concurrence <br />was mailed on August 14, 1979 to Mr. Orell and Ms. Lindsey confirming approval of <br />the Meeker Area Mines wildlife program. <br />1.1 OBJECTIVES <br />The objectives of the wildlife and aquatic biology investigations of the <br />mine sites were to establish: <br />1. A species inventory <br />2. Species distribution by habitat <br />3. Species distribution by seasons <br />4. Species population dynamics <br />• <br />L-1 <br />
