• area of bottomland habitat at Yoast occurs along a drainage that runs
south to north through the middle of the proposed permit area. Box-
elder (Acer neaundo) and aspen are the principal trees in bottomland;
Babb willow (Salix bebbiana) occurs in a narrow strip along Grassy
Creek in the southeast corner of the area. Shrubs found in this
habitat include: mountain snowberry, gooseberry (Ribes inerme), silver
sagebrush (Seriohidium canum), and chokecherry. ESCO (1993) also
identified numerous grasses and fortis in bottomland areas at Yoast.
Conservation Reserve Program
Approximately 30 acres of former cropland in the north part of
the wildlife survey area has been seeded to grass under the Conserva-
tion Reserve Program (CRP). The CRP areas are dominated by a single
species, intermediate wheatgrass (Thinoovrum intermedium). This grass
• has grown to s height of approximately five feet in much of the CRP
area (ESCO 1993).
Rock Outcroo
Although rock outcrops did not represent a vegetation type, such
areas were shown on the vegetation maps and do constitute a wildlife
habitat. This habitat is characterized by scattered sandstone out-
crops in very steep areas with sparse vegetation. Because rock out-
crop often occurs as scattered, unmappable inclusions within other
habitats, the 12 acres of rock outcrop calculated for the Yoast area
understates the actual extent of this habitat.
•
13
