Technical Memorandum: Evaluation of Deadman Gulch Background and
Lake Fork of the Gunnison Water Quality
Prepazed By: Gault Group Inc./Cortez, CO
Prepared For: Au Mining/Lake City, CO
Statement of the Purpose
The purpose of this TM was to review all available water quality data for two azeas; 1) Deadman
Gulch (the Gulch) background, and 2) the Lake Fork of the Gunnison (Lake Fork) within the
vicinity of the Deadman Gulch confluence, in order to determine if the Gulch is affecting the
water quality conditions within the Lake Fork. A variety of data sources were obtained and
reviewed as part of this process. The BLM in coordination with the EPA has conducted several
studies within 2007. LKA Int., and Au Mining have captured years of information as part of
DBMS permit procedures. Additional studies were completed by GGI in 2007 in order to gather
amore robust data set chazacterizing Deadman Gulch as a whole, and also to measure any
potential mixing zone footprint that may occur at the confluence (previously described within
Attachment A). This TM summarizes the methods and results of the water quality measurements
and characterization for Deadman Gulch (focused upon the background) and the Lake Fork.
Sources of Information
There were several sources of data obtained for the Deadman Gulch background and Lake Fork
of the Gunnison water quality characterization. These included data gathered by the Bureau of
Land Management in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency (three data sets),
from the ongoing data collection as part of the Golden Wonder DBMS permit, and from the
Chemical Trace study defined earlier within Attachment A of this report. A description of the
sampling events completed for each source is as follows;
The BLM/EPA data sets evaluated include those provided to the public from the studies
completed on 04/18/07, 05/02/07 and 05/24/07. These data sets capture locations along
Deadman Gulch and the Lake Fork depending upon flow availability. Locations on the
Lake Fork were only provided within the 04/18/07 data set, while the Deadman Gulch
`background' or the headwaters location was evaluated within all three data sets.
Summary Tables of the Data aze provided (Tables 1, 2 and 3).
• Two locations along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison (above and below the confluence of
Deadman Gulch) have been analyzed as part of ongoing LKA Int. DRMS permit efforts
since 2004. A summary of the obtained data is provided in Table 4 by yeaz and location.
Deadman Gulch background was chazacterized as part of the Chemical Trace study
summarized in Attachment A. The data were provided within Table 1 of Attachment A
and within Table 4 of this Attachment.
Results and Discussion
The following provides a discussion of the water sample analysis results by source (BLM/EPA
etc.) and by location (Deadman Gulch background and Lake Fork of the Gunnison).
