• For the approximately 3.W acres of the permit area which has
previously been disturbed by mining activities, the quantity and quality
of cut material (soil and overburden) is Beverly limited. No top soil
has been saved; no storage of top soil exist on the mine bench. The
bench ~.tself is unsuitable i'or soil stockpiling oecause of the limited
acreage (all available space is now utilized for coal stockpiling and
sux•face facilities) and poor drainage t'ux• soh soils. btcx;kj~il~d soils
must be free 1'ran possible coutaminatiou v:it;~ sta;kpiled coal and be
lucatud so as W eliiaiuate erosion of the stared sods.
It would be best to reirove the upslupe soils fur baclcgrading
and filling on the disturbed mine bench at the time these soils are
neu~ied for reclanr~tion work. l:eclamation of the permit area would
co+imence at the end of the life oY the mine.
• hfap C-6 shows the upslope and plateau areas (of the mine plan
area) that would provide the needed soil for revegetation in the permit
ax•ea. The depth and amounts of soil are listed on the map. Total
estimated tonnage required for backfilling and grading of the permit
area is 4,500 tons. Uf this, 2,WU tons of soil would be renoved from
the plateau areas indicated by h9ap C-6. The ranaining tonnage would be
Exam the poorer soils on the mire bench itself. }3ackfilling and grading
of the perniit area will be limited to the 2:1 slopes and less; see hlap C-
7. 'rhe highwalls, 1.5:1 slopes, will not he backfilled or cut back.
1'he highwalls are stable and addition cut and fill vrork would only
increase the environmental disturbances.
• - lU -
